The Brazilian Christmas has the same meaning of Christmas around the world. It is a christian date where all relatives and closer friends come together to celebrate the Jesus Christ birth. We call it “Natal”.
It might be a little weird but we celebrate christmas during the summer. Most people goes to the beach or somewhere they can freshen up and stay for the week until the New Year’s Eve. The opposite happens in the countries on the north face of the globe where all you can see is snow, like in the Hollywood movies where Santa drives his sleigh. Here he comes by foot, car, truck or helicopter and sometimes he is wearing shorts and sleeveless.
The celebration starts at midnight of December 24th when the Christmas dinner is served. Many delicious and tradicional dishes are offered such as turkey, chester (chicken), tender (ham), a snack of codfish that was inherited by the Portuguese colony and much more. In this night all kids keep waiting for the Santa Claus to bring their gifts. Building the tree and decorating it is a tradition and when you are doing it you can feel the christmas spirit around you.
On the day after, the family get together again. Do you know why?! To eat a lot again all food served last night. Actually, its the time to enjoy your family. Nowadays everyone has a personal life and usually don’t have time to meet the loved ones, but at least once in the entire year you can meet them and this is the day!
